Early next year, the African Mission Team, consisting of members including pastors, preachers, evangelists, doctors, and students will be visiting Uganda, D.R.Congo, and Burundi for 19 days.
The Republic of Uganda is a landlocked country in East Africa. Christians of all denominations made up 85.1% in Uganda; nevertheless, over 1 million people are living with HIV/AIDS (5% UNAIDS), close to 1 million have died since the early 80’s. "There are estimated to be over 2 million orphans in Uganda" (Uganda AIDS Commissions).
The first destination of this mission trip will be Hoima District. With its total population of 341,700 people, this district was reported to have the highest infected rate for HIV/AIDS. The Team will serve the local people through outdoor concert and crusade as well as educate the people through church and leadership seminars. Early this year, Africa Mission Trip 2008 gathered almost 2000 souls at the crusade held in Hoima. This year, we’ll be bringing more sound system equipments, expecting to reach out to many more souls through the Team’s outdoor crusade evangelism.
The Team then would be led to visit Kyenjojo District, the newly established district. The District faces 2 major constraints: in the education and health sector. Insufficient funds to run the department, shortage of staff and competent qualified teachers are the main concern for the people in Kyenjojo. Furthermore, the District does not have a hospital and suffers a shortage of staff in the health department with the available health centers; the doctor-patient ratio is currently at 1:76,108. There are very many diseases in Kyenjojo and many people lose their lives due to lack of medical care.
Same problems as Kyenjojo District experiences, were also faced by the city of Kamuli, the Team’s third destination. Community-based actions are really critical. Sanitation remains one of the biggest development challenges in this city. Approximately 400 people mainly children dying of diarrhea every day in Kamuli. IFGF GISI has been expanding its works to Kamuli; therefore, the Team will go there to train and empower our brothers and sisters in Christ to become a blessing and live a full life that can make many great impacts in their communities.
The Team then will be taking a short break, going on a Uganda SAFARI to discover exciting adventures and memorable wildlife encounters.
The 2nd part of this winter mission trip is to visit Goma and Bujumbura. Goma is a city of 249,862 in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. Goma lies only 13 to 18 km due south of the crater of the active Nyiragongo Volcano. The recent history of Goma has been dominated Rwandan Genocide of 1994, which in turn fuelled the First and Second Congo Wars, and by the volcano. The aftermath of these events was still having affects on the city and its surroundings until today. The massive influx created a severe humanitarian crisis, as there was an acute lack of shelter, food and water. Shortly after the arrival of nearly one million refugees, a deadly cholera outbreak claimed thousands of lives in the Hutu refugee camps around Goma. Also, in January 2002 and 2005, Nyiragongo erupted, sending a stream of lava 200 meters to one kilometer wide and up to two meters deep through the center of the city as far as the lake shore. The lava destroyed 40% of the city (more than 4,500 houses and buildings). Besides holding empowerment trainings and outdoor crusades, the Team will be visiting and officiating the orphanage school that was managed by IFGF GISI Goma.
The last destination will be city of Bujumbura, the capital of Burundi, which is next to D.R. Congo and Rwanda. This is Burundi's largest city - The estimated population in Bujumbura is 300,000 people - and its administrative, communications, and economic center. The civil that was begun in 1993 has just ended in 2006, which caused 200,000 perished. Currently, 68% of the population is living under the poverty line. We’ll be there to become a blessing by giving teaching materials, practical training, and community visit.
